It wasn't until the early 1900s that the first documented Black women's basketball clubs emerged. This movement paralleled the Harlem Renaissance, during which Black art and music made a significant impact worldwide. The museum serves as a sanctuary, honoring the profound influence of Black women on the game, both on and off the court. Before the establishment of the WNBA in 1997, 70 years of Black women's basketball history remained hidden in the archives of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and local municipalities, waiting to be rediscovered. These narratives also encompass 40 years of future basketball inspiration. Our goal is to unearth photographs, articles, and memorabilia, bringing them to life through museum exhibitions and collaborative events nationwide!
We are working towards making a Women's Sports entertainment hub dedicated to the History of Black Womens Basketball in Philadelphia.
